It started with Junebug.

Junebug showed up as a puppy not long after we lost Scout — our first dog, ten years old, to cancer. We weren't really ready to start over. Training a puppy from scratch again, after a decade of having a dog who already knew the rules, was humbling in a way we didn't expect.

Somewhere in those early, chaotic months, though, we started paying closer attention — to Junebug, and to how we wanted to remember her. Not a generic “good dog” photo, but the specific, slightly ridiculous things that make a dog her. That turned into wanting to do the same thing for other people's dogs. And cats. And whatever else shows up in someone's camera roll and makes them say “you have to see this.”

They're family, the same as anyone else in the house — each one a character in their own right. Sit June. Sit. is our attempt to actually treat them that way, one portrait at a time.
